Course Provider: Bosch.
Course Title: Diagnosis Using The Oscilloscope: Introduction
Course Category: Vehicle System Test & Diagnostic.
Course Code: VSTD9.
Duration: 2 Days.
Programme: Diagnostic Technician Programme.
Course content:
This course has been developed for garage service technicians who carry out fault diagnosis testing on vehicle systems, electrical circuits & components. The course is specific to an introduction of the skills required to use a typical automotive oscilloscope as an aid to fault diagnosis. The oscilloscope is more widely available & is being used more & more to test signals passing between the ECU and its respective sensors & actuators. The theoretical & practical instructions will provide technicians who have a thorough understanding of vehicle electrical testing using multi meters, with the skills required for operation & application of a typical oscilloscope.
Modules & subject areas:
This course is divided into linked modules and subject areas, which allow the essential underpinning theory & practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The modules & subject areas cover the following topics:
- Preliminary review of the oscilloscope.
- Displays, controls, adjustments & settings.
- Connections & test methods.
- Waveform display methods.
- Waveform interprestation & analysis.
- Typical defective signals.
- Typical applications & signals.
Attainment:
On completion of VSTD9, the trainee will be able to:
- Connect a typical automotive oscilloscope to a vehicle system & display the signal so that it can be clearly seen & remain stable on the scope display.
- Adjust typical oscilloscope controls & settings to alter & change the signal displayed so that individual parts of the signal waveform can be analysed.
- Analyse & compare waveforms to determine indications of signal input/output response, fault areas & periods of signal failure or interference.
Prerequisites and recommended reading prior to attending course:
Successful completion of VSE1 'Essential Test Procedures' is essential before attending VSTD9 and delegates should be conversant with electrical values & the use of a multi meter. Prior attendance of the course relevant to your oscilloscope is also recommended.
Assessment & certification:
The practical tasks will be carried out using Bosch oscilloscope equipment.
Delegates will be expected to complete a course examination and achieve a pass mark of 70% or more.
A certificate of competence will be issued upon completion of this.
To obtian full diagnostic technician status, the delegate is required to complete the Diagnostc Technician one day practical & theory test. Upon successful completion, the delegate will be awarded with Bosch Diagnostic Technician status & certification, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
Accreditation:
All Bosch Diagnostic Technician programme courses are co-certified by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) QAA scheme.
Recommended reading:
We recommend that delegates read the following publications prior to attending this course:
Automotive Sensors (Bosch part number 1 987 722 131).
