Course Title: Common Rail System Diagnosis.

Course Category: Vehicle Systems Diesel.

Course Code: VSD15.

Duration: 2 Days.

Programme: Diagnostic Technician Programme.

Course content:

In 1998 a major breakthrough in diesel technology occurred, radically changing the way in which diesel engines are controlled and regulated. This new system called Common Rail, will no doubt secure the future of diesel engine power sources well into the millennium. CP1 / 3 systems as well as the new piezo controlled injection principle are amongst the various topics covered on this course.

The aim of this course is to introduce automotive technicians to the Common Rail concepts and provide information regarding system diagnosis and safety procedures. The trainee will gain valuable in-depth knowledge of electronic fault diagnosis procedures relating to this system using the latest tools designed for CR repair. Use will also be made of oscilloscopes to provide visual interpretation and analysis of various sensor signals. Vehicles will be made available to provide hands-on experience where possible.

Modules and subject areas
The course is divided into linked modules and subject areas, which allow the essential underpinning theory and practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The course modules and subject areas include the following topics:

Attainment
On successful completion of VSD 15 delegates will be able to:

Prerequisites and Recommended Reading
The minimum prerequisite for this advanced vehicle systems training course is the completion of course VSD 12, which provides a thorough background to basic sensors and actuators and diesel theory. Delegates should also have experience with typical oscilloscope and diagnostic tester operation. Prior attendance on course VSTD 9 “Diagnosis using the Oscilloscope” is strongly recommended as well as the appropriate equipment user’s courses.

Recommended literature for prior reading is the Bosch publication:
Electronic Diesel Control EDC (Part No. 1987722135)
Diesel Fuel-Injection System Common Rail (Part No.
1987722142)
