Course content:

This course is designed for garage service technicians who carry out test & diagnosis on vehicle engine management systems. The aim of the course is to provide delegates with the skills & knowledge required to work with confidence & efficiency on a range of engine management systems. Customary interrogation techniques via self-diagnosis will be covered, along with direct testing of typical system sensors & actuators.

Modules & subject areas:

This course is divided into linked modules & subject areas, which allow the essential theory & practical skills knowledge to be delivered effectively. The modules & subject areas cover the following topics:

Engine Management Systems - motronic overview.
Motronic - fuel supply sub system.
Diagnosis - testing & circuit diagrams.
Systems input sensors.
Systems actuators & ignition components.
Emissions control overview.

Attainment:

On successful completion of the course, the trainee will be able to:

Complete tests to prove the integrity of the fuel supply sub system using typical fuel pressure test equipment.
Carry out typical self-diagnosis test routines to retrieve & display fault codes stored within the system memory.
Perform individual component tests to identify component or circuit connection faults identified by typical fault code.

Prerequisites and recommended reading prior to attending course:

Successful completion of the VSE1, Essential Test Procedures course and VSG2 Ignition Systems course is a prerequisite to attending the VSG5 course, a good understanding of oscilloscopes is also preferable, so attendance of the VSTD9 Oscilloscope course is an advantage.

Assessment & certification:

Delegates will be expected to complete a course examination and achieve a pass mark of 70% or more.

A certificate of competence will be issued upon completion of this.

To obtian full diagnostic technician status, the delegate is required to complete the Diagnostc Technician one day practical & theory test. Upon successful completion, the delegate will be awarded with Bosch Diagnostic Technician status & certification, awarded by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI).
